Vision for circular resource plant presented

Today, a new vision is presented for how Getteröverket wastewater plant in Varberg, Sweden will be developed into a landscape-integrated resource plant, designed by C.F. Møller Architects in collaboration with Vivab, Vatten & Miljö i Väst.

The coastal town of Varberg in western Sweden is undergoing strong growth, with a rail tunnel and a new station area being built, as well as a new residential area being developed, enabling the town to create new links to the sea. As a result of the city's expansion, the Getteröverket wastewater treatment plant needs to grow with it. Today, a vision and direction are presented for how Getteröverket will be developed into an accessible and landscape-integrated resource plant. A space where nature can claim its place and where new technology enables smarter treatment.

"It is with great pleasure that we have been entrusted by Vivab to develop ideas for Getteröverket. We have noticed great interest in C.F. Møller Architects' holistic approach that leads to the emergence of a fantastic consensus in our projects. The proposal is a very fine example of this holistic approach and means that we have succeeded in meeting the challenges of the project and utilised existing natural features of the site and created a solution that benefits Vivab's operations, the city and outdoor environment. Getteröverket will be a model for how industrial properties in urban environments should be developed in the future," says Jelmar Brouwer, Head of Landscape, C.F. Møller Architects Sweden.

A green and water-rich activity trail

A green and water-rich activity corridor will be created, bringing recreation and ecosystem services to the area. A wide pedestrian and bicycle path leads the public through the property. The extension of the resource facility is achieved through a landscape integrated building with rich green roofs, which are integrated and made accessible in the park environment through sloping roof surfaces. The resource plant therefore blends tastefully into its surroundings. Silo-shaped glass buildings provide the public with an insight into the activities of the Resource Centre. Technical facilities in the park environment such as the outlet for purified water are given artistic expression and their function is clarified by information signs.

Innovative nutrition factory and knowledge hub

The circular resource plant will no longer be visually perceived as a traditional factory, but will blend in and become part of its surroundings. Under the green roofs, the resource plant will harness nutrients and purify water for reuse.

- We are rebuilding and incorporating innovative technologies that make the plant climate neutral. We will then reduce greenhouse gas emissions and micro-pollutants and reuse nutrients and treated wastewater to a greater extent," says Alexander Keucken, Head of Research and Development, Vivab.

The vision also includes a square with a knowledge hub that invites the public to use the new connection to the city. The knowledge hub will be a new attraction where children and adults will be educated and informed about the importance of circular resource management in the city.
