Revitalizing Bellerivestrasse 36: From Monolith to Modern Pavilion by Lake Zürich

Perched by Lake Zürich, Bellerivestrasse 36 has undergone a remarkable transformation. What was once a closed-off concrete block from the 1970s has been rejuvenated into a transparent, sustainable pavilion that merges seamlessly with its park surroundings. Led by Thue Hasløv, a partner at C.F. Møller Architects, the renovation turned a dated structure into a modern, energy-efficient workspace that harmonises with nature.

A New Façade for Openness

“The building was iconic yet outdated. We aimed to open it up and integrate it with the landscape,” explains Hasløv. The former opaque façade has been replaced with horizontal photovoltaic panels that generate energy and provide shading. This transformation brings natural light into the building and frames stunning views of the park and lake.

“These panels are a seamless blend of aesthetics and sustainability,” says Hasløv, reflecting the firm’s commitment to green design.

Blending Architecture with Nature
The renovated building now features cascading sections, with green terraces linking it to the park. These terraces are more than decorative—they support biodiversity, manage rainwater, and soften the building’s interaction with the landscape.

“We wanted the building to feel like a natural extension of the park,” Hasløv notes. The expansive horizontal canopies further connect the building to its surroundings, emphasising a sense of openness and accessibility.

Creating Collaborative Spaces
A spacious atrium that promotes social interaction and collaboration is central to the design. This light-filled hub is a focal point for the building’s users, encouraging informal meetings and knowledge sharing.

“Architecture should enhance how we work and live,” says Hasløv. The design prioritises well-being and productivity by fostering interaction and offering comfortable green spaces.

Sustainability as a Guiding Principle
Bellerivestrasse 36 is a model of sustainable architecture, meeting Swiss Minergie standards for minimal energy consumption. The solar panels, green roofs, and choice of natural materials reduce the building’s environmental footprint while enhancing user comfort.

“We were committed to creating a responsible and forward-looking design,” says Hasløv, highlighting the project’s emphasis on renewable energy and ecological features.

Value for Client and Community
Modernising rather than demolishing an existing building was cost-effective and environmentally responsible for the client. This decision retained valuable office space and led to long-term energy savings. For the community, the new pavilion’s transparent design and green integration enrich the local urban fabric.

“This is about giving back to the city,” emphasises Hasløv, “creating a building that serves its users and enhances the area’s beauty.”

A Vision for the Future
Bellerivestrasse 36 now stands as a climate- and people-friendly pavilion by Lake Zürich, symbolising the future of urban architecture. This project exemplifies C.F. Møller Architects’ dedication to enhancing life for both people and the planet through thoughtful, innovative design.
