The doors are now opening to Vega School & Activity Centre – a new vibrant meeting place with a creative pulse from morning to evening

This week marks the inauguration of Vega School & Activity Centre, designed by C.F. Møller Architects. A unique gathering point in the Swedish district of Vega that offers space for all, young and old alike. Here, school, culture, and leisure come together under one roof.

In April 2019, C.F. Møller Architects were commissioned to design the Vega School & Activity Centre, situated in the growing district of Vega, located south of Stockholm. Almost three years ago, the groundbreaking ceremony took place, and this Monday, it was finally time for the students to inaugurate their new school environments. The festivities continue on Saturday with a big family celebration featuring a parade through Vega and a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

Through the central location of the Vega School & Activity Centre, the municipality's vision of "the school in the middle of the village" is realized. Associations and non-profit activities are invited to use the facilities alongside several of the municipality's departments. This creates new connections between different age groups and interests. Considering the school as a resource in urban development and integration is a unique approach, and the architectural challenge has been to materialize this idea.

"Our vision was to become a place for exploration and learning, and we feel that it came true the moment we opened the doors," says Lotta Gusterman, Development Manager of the Culture and Leisure Administration.

Strong commitment

Located in the heart of Vega, it strengthens the area's identity and is highly visible to visitors. Its proximity to the station makes it a natural meeting place and a characteristic landmark in the city. It accommodates, among other things, a primary school, library, cultural school, sports hall, youth centre, café, and space for meetings and events. With a capacity for about 900 students and 150 staff members, the new school and activity center play a significant role in the area.

"It's incredibly exciting to design a public building that holds such a prominent place in a new, growing neighborhood. The commitment from the municipality, property owners, contractors, and especially the organizations that will fill the building has made the work a pure joy," says Henrik Jonsson Linton, Architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

He continues: "We have led the process where all the organizations that will use the building have come together to collectively formulate needs and opportunities. Thanks to the active involvement of representatives from youth and elderly groups, cultural and sports activities, primary and cultural schools, we have been able to design a place that will be filled with activity from early morning to late evening. Through continuous joint efforts to balance vision, desires, and possibilities, the concept of a vibrant activity center has taken a concrete form that will be enduring over time."

Smart spaces make for a vibrant building

The building's openness toward the street allows the interior of the activity centre to be an integrated part of the district's public spaces. People will move around here for a significant portion of the day. The large central staircase serves as the backbone of the activity centre as it leads up through the building. Rooms that are dedicated to students' group work during the day transform into spaces for lectures and meetings in the evening. Visual arts, textiles, and music rooms welcome cultural school activities and study circles. The upper school's break room becomes a meeting place for the cultural school and sports associations. At the heart of the building, the cultural room takes a central place, designed to host performances by the Swedish Riksteatern and other actors. Here, the school's arena for music and dance performances, as well as numerous lectures and presentations, can be found.

"Vega School is meant to be an innovation hub for students, staff, and citizens of Vega and Haninge municipality. Through smart planning, the same spaces in Vega School & Activity Center can be used by both the school, community life, and the municipality's cultural and leisure activities. And when everything is gathered under the same roof, the school and other activities can work together to engage all children and young people," explains Bassem Jerbi, Principal of Vega School & Activity Centre.

The commission also included the development of an overarching signage program for both the school and the activity centre. This encompassed both outdoor and indoor signage with the goal of establishing a consistent visual identity that not only aids navigation but also reinforces the school's character. The concept was built on thoughtfully chosen materials, color schemes, and design elements to create a harmonious interplay with the surroundings.

An open, playful, and green schoolyard

The building's outdoor spaces engage both nature and the urban environment, two qualities that define the new Vega. At the main entrance, an urban-style entrance plaza has been created to anchor the building in the new urban setting. The plaza serves as a new meeting place in the city and enhances the feeling that the building is open and accessible to all. The schoolyard itself has been designed to be more playful and green, providing schoolchildren with an enriching environment for play, activity, meetings, and education. The schoolyard connects to the area's green spaces, and its rich and varied tree plantings enhance the area's green structure, ecological values, and provide opportunities for sustainable stormwater management. The color scheme of the schoolyard aligns with the building's red tones, creating a warm and inviting overall impression.

"When we design schoolyards, we strive to create environments that feel exciting and evoke curiosity and a sense of discovery. We always have close collaboration with our architects to achieve holistic solutions. Now that we see the finished result, I believe that one experiences a well-integrated landscape and building. We are particularly proud of that," says Henrik Larsson, Landscape Architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

He continues: "Our work has focused on guiding and facilitating the activities to achieve optimal cooperation and synergy. This model emerges as a future scenario for municipalities striving for social sustainability through generations collaborating together."

The project is a collaboration with Haninge municipality and the Swedish construction contracting company Byggdialog.

The public art works

Knee-Deep by Molly Haslund and architect Aspasia Balta is a permanent public sculpture commissioned by Haaninge Konsthall and Art Platform Sweden for Vega School & Activity Centre. Knee-Deep is placed in the courtyard of the school and is available to the public. As a sculpture, Knee-Deep captures the delicate line between land and water and the power it carries.

Linjer i Rörlese (Lines in Motion) by Jakob Ojanen, is a public commission for Vega School & Activity Centre, and is located inside the school at the central staircase.
