Construction has begun for new climate-friendly and community-focused school

Groundbreaking Ceremony Launches Construction of New Ry School and Daycare Centre, Highlighting Community and Environmental Goals

Wednesday the 30th marked the official beginning of the Ry School and Daycare Centre’s construction, celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony. Designed with a focus on sustainability, well-being, and landscape integration, the school will serve as an inspiring and flexible learning environment for children, students, and adults alike.

The school’s two-level structure cascades down from the south, inviting the community in through an easily accessible and welcoming layout. The design brings the building to life, with daily activities unfolding. A double-height common square serves as the heart of the school, creating a vibrant communal hub where students, staff, and visitors can gather. Smaller gathering spots in clusters within the school and daycare ensure that people of all ages can find spaces for focused activities and social interaction.

Strategically located near the Ry-hallerne leisure centre, the project embraces the concept of “pearls on a string.” This vision connects the school's diverse functions—from cooking facilities to music rooms—and extends them as a resource for the entire Ry community outside school hours. The passage linking the school and Ry-hallerne fosters continuous movement and collaboration, emphasizing a culture of well-being and activity.

Focus on climate-friendliness and communities
In line with its environmental commitments, the building aims for a yearly carbon footprint under 9.0 kg CO₂/m². Utilizing wood-based facades and a column-and-beam structure, the design prioritizes climate-friendly materials and construction techniques, underscoring a commitment to reduce environmental impact.

"The area here is already bustling with life. People playing sports. Children at play. Parents enjoying a coffee. There will be even more activity here in the future. The school and daycare centre were designed as a unified concept from the start and will share certain spaces and outdoor facilities. This means more children can benefit from these resources—and both children and adults can make use of some of the facilities outside of school hours,” said Mayor Frands Fischer, before taking a seat in the digger to break ground for the new development.

The new school will be built within flexible frameworks, accommodating three class groups from Reception to Year 6. It will provide space for approximately 450-500 pupils and 50 staff members. The daycare centre will house around 50 nursery children and 100 pre-school children, and 35-40 staff members.

The building is expected to be completed in 2026.
