C.F. Møller Architects Wins European Green Award for Renovation Project in Zurich

C.F. Møller Architects has been honoured with the European Green Award for their Bellerivestrasse project in Zurich, Switzerland, recognising their innovative integration of solar technology into the building's facade.

The project involves revitalising an iconic Swiss office building from the 1970s, incorporating solar panels into the facade to create an elegant and open structure that harmoniously blends with the surrounding park and lake.

"As architects, we are incredibly excited to receive the European Green Award for our work on the Bellerivestrasse project. This recognition underscores our commitment to integrating climate-friendly measures into our designs. We are proud to be acknowledged by the European Institute of Applied Sustainability for our contribution to responsible and forward-thinking architecture in Europe. In addition to the project's LEED Platinum and Minergie-A certifications, this award further highlights our efforts to create architecture with sustainable initiatives," says Thue Borgen, partner and architect at C.F. Møller.

A Pavilion in the Park

The new facade design with solar panels gives the building an open, horizontal, and light expression, reminiscent of an elegant pavilion in the park. Solar panels are integrated into a triangular steel structure on each floor of the building's transparent facade, redefining the building's 1970s aesthetic. This dual-function design not only enhances the visual appearance but also introduces sustainable elements such as solar energy and external shading, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate without direct sunlight and reducing the need for cooling.

"Previously, the building appeared closed, especially when the shades were down on sunny days. Working with a structure from the 1970s presented both challenges and opportunities. We saw it as a canvas for reinterpretation, blending sustainable elements with the inherent character of the era and rethinking its relationship to light and space. This process allowed us to honour the building's past while leading it into a greener, more vibrant future," reflects Thue Borgen, partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

Self-Sustaining Energy

The new facade design provides solar protection for the interior while generating energy through PV panels. The upper and lower sides of the panels appear homogeneous but are made from different materials: aluminium on the underside and glass panels with solar modules on the sloped upper side.

In addition to integrating solar panels into the building's facade design, C.F. Møller also demonstrates eco-friendly initiatives with rooftop terraces, which have been transformed into green spaces connecting them with the surrounding park to manage rainwater and enhance biodiversity. This creates better conditions for plants and microorganisms in the park.

The project is certified as Minergie-A and LEED Platinum: Core and Shell.
