Building Permission Granted for Tampere University Hospital Masterplan

C.F. Møller Architects, in collaboration with ARCO Architecture Company, has developed the concepts and design strategy for the future-proof masterplan for the extension of Tampere University Hospital (TAYS) in Finland, which has adaptability and healing architecture at its core. The project aims to redefine healthcare spaces for patients, staff, and the community.

The masterplan is based on a holistic approach that ensures seamless integration with existing hospital buildings while introducing upgraded main flow areas to enhance connectivity across the complex. It establishes a modular and standardised building structure of 200,000 m2 that can be adapted to future changes, enabling flexibility and synergy while improving workflow.

“We have together developed an overall design strategy that ensures a flexible masterplan and a new hospital structure that are well integrated with the existing hospital buildings, improving wayfinding for the entire complex”, says Maibritt Dammann, Head of Healthcare at C.F. Møller Architects.

Healing Through Design
The design prioritises healing architecture, leveraging natural light, greenery, intuitive wayfinding, and warm materials to create a welcoming, human and non-institutional environment. Landscaped courtyards and views of the surrounding terrain play a vital role in reducing anxiety and fostering recovery while also promoting staff well-being and reducing workplace stress.

“The landscape design for Tampere University Hospital becomes a crucial part of the natural guidance of the hospital users, while adapting to the local characteristics and bringing the authentic context into the project”, says Thomas Olsen, Head of Landscape & Urbanism at C.F. Møller Architects.

Efficiency and Flexibility
Collaboration with Delfoi Consulting on simulations and analyses that support the design studies has led to optimised clinical workflows and logistics, achieving potential operational cost savings of over 10%. Modular building structures provide flexibility for future expansions, supporting sustainable growth and adaptability.

Collaborative Success
The project owes its success to close collaboration with the Tampere University Hospital client organisation through continuous teamwork, including feasibility studies, ensuring shared visions and practical solutions. The masterplan will serve as a strategic guide for future developments, including the detailed design of the new upcoming clinics carried out by the ManU team, and based on C.F. Møller Architects and ARCO Architecture Company’s design concepts of the new Child & Youth Psychiatry facility.

C.F. Møller Architects and ARCO Architecture Company also previously collaborated on the Tampere Adult Psychiatry building, underscoring their continued contribution to the Tampere Hospital campus.
