SIMAC, Svendborg's new maritime education centre, is built with a clear and visible concrete grid that establishes both the load-bearing structure and the spatial structure of an open and transparent building.

Chairman of the jury, Kent Martinussen, architect and CEO of DAC (Danish Architecture Center), says:
- "A consistent and architecturally well-thought-out use of prefab concrete, which in one convincing move brings together the load-bearing structure and the spatial structure into a resilient grid of columns and girders. The façade plane is boldly set back, so that the load-bearing concrete grid also manifests itself as the visible element in the external appearance of the educational institution.

With the new building, SIMAC, which was previously located in several places in the city, has been united under one roof and brought to its rightful element at the harbourfront in the Danish city Svendborg. The architects behind the project, C.F. Møller Architects and EFFEKT Arkitekter, have designed the building to support the synergy of the maritime area and in its architectural design opens up towards the harbour and city and interacts with the people of Svendborg.

"The concept has been to complete the vibrant environment along the building towards the harbour. We have done this by constructing a transparent building in raw concrete that form a grid structure towards the harbour and imitate the maritime masts both vertically and horizontally," says Mads Mandrup Hansen, architect and partner at C.F. Møller Architects.

About Betonelement Prisen
Betonelementprisen is an architectural award that honours an ambitious architectural, innovative and aesthetic use of prefab concrete in construction. The award recognises the architectural artistry of the facades themselves and the courage and talent of the architects to challenge the form and expression of prefabricated concrete. Dansk Beton, Fabriksbetonforeningen og Betonelement-Foreningen are behind the award.

The new SIMAC will be in use and welcome the students after the summer of 2023.
