C.F. Møller Architects in the final round with sustainable housing concept

C.F. Møller Architects is among six selected to move forward with a solution for sustainable architecture under the initiative "Housing from 4 to 1 planet", which aims to reduce CO2 emissions from housing by 75%

The "Housing from 4 to 1 Planet" initiative invited architects to submit their solutions for climate-friendly architecture and materials with a carbon footprint of a quarter of the current standard. The initiative is motivated by the fact that Denmark consumes four times more than our share of the Earth's total resources. And construction is a major source of CO2 emissions.

More than 70 proposals were submitted, and the jury has selected six solutions, from which C.F. Møller Architects is one of those selected to move forward to the next round with their pioneering concept for sustainable housing "GAIA - life cycles within boundaries", which rethinks the Nordic building tradition with a focus on behavior, construction, materials, and climate challenges.

The jury states:

"The proposal is a comprehensive program for building transformation rather than a defined housing concept. It presents solutions for all building typologies that point in the direction of a total footprint of 0 kg CO2/m2.

The proposal explores the possibility of developing the Nordic housing tradition by simultaneously rethinking human behavior ("life-of-people"), construction and materials ("life-of-building"), and buildings that minimise while adapting and creating quality of life in a changing climate ("life-of-planet"). The proposal is notable, among other things, in showing how compact, attractive housing can look in multi-storey buildings."

"We are extremely proud that our GAIA concept has been chosen by the jury. GAIA shows the way towards climate neutrality for housing with a holistic approach that unites the life cycles of people, buildings, and the planet," says Rob Marsh, Head of Sustainability at C.F. Møller Architect.

Three winners will be chosen, and their projects built as pavilions for the UIA23 World Congress in Copenhagen, on the waterfront between the Royal Library and BloxHub.

The six shortlisted projects

- C.F. Møller Architects with Gaia - life cycles within boundaries, rethinking the Nordic building tradition with a focus on behavior, construction materials, and climate change

- Matter of Space, and Niche Architects with Straw Mill, using straw as the primary material

- The studio Lokal and Aaen Engineering with Manifest for the planetarily reasonable dwelling, playing with dogma rules for housing forms and for constructions

- Henning Larsen, and Djernis & Bell with Residential Regenesis, addressing increased densification of existing buildings through "grafting"

- Reværk with the Nature Rows, where sprouted materials take centre stage, along with clay soil

- Rønnow Leth & Gori, and CINARK with A small dwelling in covered brick blocks, with brick and thatch at the centre

VILLUM Foundation and Realdania Foundation are behind the "Housing from 4 to 1 Planet" initiative.
