C.F. Møller to design homes at Sundmolen in Nordhavn

C.F. Møller has won the architectural competition to create new family homes that will be integrated with the old warehouses at Sundmolen in Inner Nordhavn, in Copenhagen. CASA is developing and building the project, which will hold DGNB Gold (German Green Building Council) certification.

Peace, dense urban spaces, green gardens and views of the harbour. C.F. Møller is behind 86 new homes totalling approximately 8,400 m² at the Sundmolen building zone 5.05 in the centre of Inner Nordhavn, between the Århusgade quarter and Levantkaj. This building zone is among the most centrally located in the new plan for the development of the whole of Sundmolen, based on a clear vision. This area will be the sustainable town of the future, with a mixed urban quarter giving a clear green profile, the preservation and integration of the existing warehouse buildings, and with urban spaces along the harbour creating a unique new part of Copenhagen. The construction project will also achieve DGNB Gold sustainability certification. Response to demand Up to 2025, it is estimated that Copenhagen will grow by 18 per cent in population terms. To create new homes for new residents, areas like Nordhavn are developing rapidly. "There is very strong demand for new and expanded opportunities to live and work in Copenhagen. This project is an ambitious initiative that can meet this demand," says Lone Wiggers, partner in C.F. Møller, about the project. "In this former industrial area we now have some fantastic opportunities to develop the urban quarter right down to the quayside, and overall the development of Nordhavn has every opportunity to set new standards for urban development in Copenhagen," she says. Fewer cars and special architecture The project at Sundmolen is being created in an area where there will be fewer cars in the urban landscape. The green gardens, dense urban spaces and views of the harbour are all elements that will help to create an attractive area for residents and visitors. The special architectural character will also help to ensure a calm and intimate atmosphere, supporting the experience of a lively urban quarter in close proximity to the harbour. The starting point for the new development is the typical Copenhagen apartment blocks, and the buildings' height is matched to the surrounding green spaces and views of the harbour, to ensure attractive light and shadow effects. Passages will be established at the full height of the buildings, helping to ensure an inflow of light into both the courtyard spaces and the homes. The housing project will have a vertical expression that contrasts strongly with Sundmolen's four preserved warehouses, which are characterised by a striking horizontal expression. The homes in this construction area will have floorspace of between 60 m² and 140 m². C.F. Møller has won the competition to design the new homes in competition with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter.
