New design for bus stops in Northern Jutland

In cooperation with the public transport company Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (NT), C.F. Møller Design has developed a new design for bus stop equipment in the North Denmark Region. The first units have now been delivered to various municipalities in Northern Jutland, and many more will follow in the coming months and years.

C.F. Møller and Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (NT) are now taking initiatives to improve public transport for both potential and existing customers. The two parties have therefore now developed a new design for bus stops in Northern Jutland. "The bus stops make an important contribution to the overall travel experience. So it has been vital for us to develop a concept for the bus stops in a modern, characterful and durable design that also improves the comfort level for NT's many customers," explains Jon Brøcker, head of department at C.F. Møller Design. Previously in the North Denmark Region, the various municipalities have selected different solutions over the years, with the consequence that the bus stops vary considerably in terms of design, comfort and equipment. Therefore these municipalities supported NT's wish for the coming new bus stops to have a uniform design. A joint application to the Danish Transport and Construction Agency for support to upgrade the bus stops for around DKK 22 million paved the way for the uniform new design. Open design process The task began with the creation of a design brief, setting the framework for the design project with NT's goals for function, design, comfort and branding. In collaboration with a working group consisting of representatives from the Northern Jutlandic municipalities, C.F. Møller Design then, in an open process, further developed the design and the requirements of the individual equipment groups. "This was a really good process in which various options were tested, and the municipalities' experience was included in the products, so that today we have a solution that fulfils the requirements of design, comfort and functionality," says Ole Schleemann, deputy director at NT. Cooperation with the supplier The design phase led to a design manual with a related work description laying down the basic design principles, as the basis for an EU invitation to tender. This format enabled the bidding suppliers to contribute their knowledge and experience, so that overall the best solution at the best price was achieved. VEKSØ A/S won the tender and cooperated on completing the development of the individual products within a short time: "We're very satisfied with the process and the final product we've achieved. C.F. Møller included our wishes and requirements of the design and they also challenged us with various ideas and solutions, so that today we have a product series that we are very proud of," says Ole Schleemann. "The municipalities in Northern Jutland have welcomed the design and the individual products. The products' strength is their great flexibility, which means that they can be adapted to the individual situations, while also maintaining continuity. This was important to us," he emphasises. The series includes such products as shelters in different variations and dimensions, stands and signs, benches to sit and lean on, bicycle parking and rubbish bins. C.F. Møller Design served as NT's adviser throughout the process, from the initial outlines and user process, to approved concept, design manual, invitation to tender and product development.
