C.F. Møller Architects presents a proposal for a new conference centre and meeting place in Lund city centre

HYBRID is C.F. Møller Architects’ proposal to to build a multifunctional meeting forum for Skanska and Lund Municipality. The idea behind the project is to create an interplay between new and historic buildings and urban spaces.

HYBRID is a sculptural urban space with detailed brick facades and a beautifully designed conference hall facing Västra Station square with facades made of recycled copper and an interior in bright wood. The various building types - offices, a hotel and conference spaces - are clearly distinguished and strategically located to provide value-creating synergies and public spaces at street level. The aim is to design the HYBRID block as a public hub with distinct, eye-catching architecture and a silhouette like other important buildings such as the University Library, the Grand Hotel and Skissernas Museum.

“HYBRID is a new landmark that takes the form of a sculptural cluster and creates a setting for future meeting places in a historically and geographically important part of the city. It’s a rare and important task to incorporate these culturally significant environments into an urban and architecturally designed habitat. We’ve taken a holistic approach to the project with the aim of creating value and new attraction in the city”, says Mads Mandrup Hansen, partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

The building project will create a vibrant and accessible roof landscape with spacious roof terraces and plant beds that enhance the experience of a building that opens up the boundaries between outside and inside spaces. The landscape design at ground level and the roof landscape will provide sights for visitors and passers-by in all seasons and for everyone in Lund, both young and old.

Public restaurant, café and sky bar
The block includes several public features that are extensions of city life. A large restaurant with a bar and outdoor seating next to Västra Station square is complemented by a café that opens onto the park road. The hotel cuts a slender and taller figure, with a public sky bar and restaurant at the top offering views of the city and the plains. A large central staircase in the public foyer allows for spontaneous public events and leads visitors to the large conference hall. From the public square, the conference space branches out into the preserved parts of the old District Court, which creates an exciting connection between new and old.

“The new meeting forum has the potential to become a new important meeting place and a boost for Lund as a platform for innovation and culture. We envisage a new hub in the city and region that points to the future and highlights Lund’s unique urban and historical qualities”, says Ola Jonsson, associate partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

The proposal is based on a sustainable and circular approach with an integrated design that will make the area more environmentally friendly. Among other things, we propose constructing the buildings using hybrid wood and facades made of brick and recycled copper.

In spring 2021, Skanska and Lund Municipality put a parallel architectural project out to tender to obtain proposals for the design of a conference centre in the Häradshövdingen district.  The project comprises a conference centre, a hotel and offices, making up a total of approximately 30,000 sqm. Three architectural firms have been invited to submit proposals: C.F. Møller Architects, Krook & Tjäder
