Bispebjerg vinner MIPIM AR:s Future Projects-pris

Bispebjerg vinner MIPIM AR:s Future Projects-pris - C.F. Møller

17.3.2016 | C.F. Møller’s design for the new Bispebjerg Hospital has been named the winner of the prestigious MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Award, which is presented at the international MIPIM Real Estate show in Cannes.

A unanimous jury has appointed C.F. Møller’s design of the new acute wards at the New Bispebjerg Hospital as the winner of The Architectural Review MIPIM Future Projects Award in the category ”Old and New”.

- The award is a major international recognition that we have created an innovative new hospital design. The proposal not only unites the historical hospital and the new buildings, it also activates the landscape’s and the communities’ healing and health-promoting qualities. The proposal is an essential model for the open and integral hospital of the future, says Klavs Hyttel, partner in C.F. Møller, about the project.

A strong further development
The 66.500 m² design, by C.F. Møller and C.F. Møller Landscape, in cooperation with Terroir and engineers Alectia and Søren Jensen, is a reinterpretation of the existing Bispebjerg Hospital’s listed pavilion structure and landscaping from 1913, in the form of 12 oblong buildings around a central terraced garden sequence, with strong references to both the hospital's architecture and the surrounding Copenhagen Northwest district. The façade design and choice of materials takes its inspiration from the original hospital, as well as the classic Danish 1930’s apartment buildings that make up most of the nearby context.

For this, the jury, consisting of esteemed industry experts Dr Sutherland Lyall, Peter Stewart, Roger Zogolovitch and Paul Finch, selected the proposal as winner of the “Old and New” category:

- The typology is reinterpreted in an effective and contemporary way, maximising the benefits of light and nature. It provides variegation without flashiness, said the jury about C.F. Møller's Bispebjerg design.

With the patient and family in focus
The new acute ward constitutes the largest part of the New Bispebjerg Hospital, and includes emergency room, operating rooms, wards and many other features that are essential for the future hospital. The project is designed with an emphasis on light, air, closeness to nature and easy wayfinding, as a concrete expression of the ideas behind healing architecture integrated with green landscape.

The innovative bed wards represent a new approach to improve the experience of the hospitalized patient: Transparent sliding doors between the single-bed rooms and corresponding hallways prevent isolation and enable patients to partake in the general life of the ward, and to engage with other patients. The hallways are transformed into daylight-flooded atriums for a hotel-like experience, allowing for “cross floor” interaction and encouraging physical rehabilitation via built-in fysio- and ergotherapy aides.

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards, now in their 15th year, recognise and celebrate the role of design in the creation of successful development, which includes the contribution made to the public realm as well as the quality of proposed buildings, and provide a snapshot of what architects and clients are planning across the world.
