Museum Heritage of the Coast

The museum Heritage of the Coast is located at the Trondheim Fjord in northern Norway, and is an important mediator of coastal tradition, history and development. It houses an active boatyard of traditional boat construction, and exhibits focused on coastal culture. The project proposes three new buildings that will display the museum's rare boats and create a unifying expression for the existing complex.

The project is based on great respect for the shipbuilders of the past, and the design is therefore a tribute to the traditional fishing boats of the fjord. The façade’s black slats are reminiscent of the tarred planks of a ship, and the building’s folded roof mimics the shape of a ship's hull. At the same time, the building is given a flowing and modern expression by the facade slats that are gathered together and raised over windows and doors.

The floor level of the indoor exhibition follows the outdoor terrain, emphasizing the connection between inside and outside, and interior materials such as oiled wood and raw concrete provide a strong tactile expression related to the exhibits and the unique fjord landscape.
